How Interior Design Directly Affects Your Airbnb Revenue

Interior design in STR is not primarily about aesthetics. It is about commercial performance — measurably affecting click-through, conversion, and nightly rate.

Interior design in the context of short-term rental properties is not primarily about aesthetics. It is about commercial performance. The design decisions a host makes — colour palette, furniture choices, lighting, textiles, the coherence of the space as a whole — directly affect the click-through rate of a listing in search results, the conversion rate of visitors to bookings, and the nightly rate guests are willing to pay.

The Photography Problem

Before interior design affects a booking, it affects a photograph. On Airbnb, the primary listing image is the single most important factor in click-through rate. Eye-tracking research shows that guests make a click decision within one to two seconds of seeing a listing image. The interior design choices that photograph most effectively are more commercially valuable than the design choices that look best in person.

Carl McGlasson: When I walk into a property that is performing below its potential, the photography is often the first thing I look at. I have seen modest properties photographed so well that the listing outperforms properties that are objectively nicer to stay in.

What Converts — The Psychology of Guest Decision-Making

Guests are not consciously evaluating design quality when they browse listings. They are experiencing a feeling and making a booking decision based on that feeling. The design elements that consistently generate the strongest positive emotional responses are warmth, coherence, and specificity.

Neutrality is one of the most common and most commercially costly design errors. Hosts who choose inoffensive beige throughout are not maximising their appeal — they are creating a property that generates no strong feeling at all. Guests book strong feelings, not the absence of them.

The Coherence Premium

Properties with a coherent, well-executed design identity command a meaningful premium. Coherence does not require expensive furniture — it requires decisions to be made in relation to each other rather than independently.

The Highest-Leverage Design Investments

Bedding and bed presentation: hotel-grade duvet covers, properly ironed and dressed, with appropriate decorative pillows. Lighting: layered lighting (ambient, task, accent) is the most underinvested element in most UK STR properties. A genuine focal point: every high-performing listing has at least one image that stops the scroll.

Guests do not book properties. They book feelings. Interior design is how you create the feeling that makes them choose you over the comparable listing down the road.
